The More You Know: There's More than One Type of Embalming

Did you know there are FOUR types of embalming?

  1. Arterial Embalming: The blood is removed from the body via the veins and replaced with an embalming solution via the arteries.

  2. Hypodermic Embalming: A supplemental method which refers to the injection of embalming chemicals into tissue with a hypodermic needle and syringe. Normally used as needed on a case by case basis to treat area where arterial fluid has not been successfully distributed during the main arterial injection.

  3. Cavity Embalming: The embalmer uses a device called a trocar (see picture) to puncture the stomach, bladder, large intestines, lungs, and other hollow organs.

  4. Surface Embalming: Refers to the application of embalming fluid to the skin of the deceased body to preserve damage suffered during autopsy, removal of organs for donation, disease, etc.
